Avian Influenza (AI) in its various permutations has now jumped the species barrier.
What this means – to the non-scientists among us – is that you can now catch Bird Flu from things other than birds. In Texas, a farm hand caught avian flu from a cow. There is concern it may also spread to pigs.
South Africa has nothing to worry about – yet…. Is the cheerful news on this very worrisome topic. There are a number of elements of our local agricultural industry that mitigate against the same thing happening here, but scientists say it is good to be informed.
The good news is that a South African company has developed, within three months, a breakthrough vaccine.
