As the excitement from the recent election dies down, the public attention will turn to plans for the Christmas holidays. Already the decorations are up in the stores, the specials are being advertised, and the holiday plans are being discussed.
Most holiday celebrations feature meals and food, and in many cases the main dish will be chicken – whether as a roast chicken at lunch, chicken on the braai, or chicken from the take-away.
The price of chicken therefore is of huge concern to everyone. According to our research the price of chicken has increased above inflation for the last ten years, and our poultry industry should urgently be finding ways to put a stop to these price increases and open up the industry to new players.
That is our theme for this month: the reasons for soaring prices, what can be done, and what various organisations are suggesting as solutions.
