We introduce a new feature this week: an Insider View of the poultry industry penned by analyst Glen McMaster, with some robust opinions that are sure to ruffle some feathers.

And as cases of Avian Flu dwindle in the country - due to aggressive containment measures - farmers and poultry suppliers breathe a sigh of relief. Now all that is left to do, is deal with the fall-out. In our Poultry Analysis this week, we examine the ongoing predictions of chicken and egg shortages (which are thankfully being managed) along with prognostications that the effects of the flu will be felt for many years to come. Farmers and suppliers are reeling from their losses while government is mooting compensation along with tariff rebates on imports.

Risk analyst Chris Hattingh does a pre-AGOA economic predictions podcast, based on the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement, while we line up a second podcast with Chris that looks back on the AGOA negotiations last week.

While a hot debate rages between the large poultry companies and importers over the lifting of tariffs in order to mitigate food shortages, this explainer shows that the problems in the poultry are not caused by imports.

And perhaps, just to drive the point home, our Tariff Fact Sheet shows how tariff rebates have actually led to a decrease in the amount of imports.
