We have a 'new' minister of agriculture, in an acting capacity. Senzo Mchunu, previously Premier of KZN and National Minister of Water and Sanitation, has inherited the portfolio from Thoko Didiza. If this becomes a permanent position, we will be watching closely to see which kind of direction that the new minister will take his department.
We are still waiting to find out who will inherit the mantle of Trade and Industry from Ebrahim Patel. For an overview of the kind of challenges awaiting this new minister, listen to our podcast, where UCT economics professor Lawrence Edwards discusses what Trade and Industry is supposed to do, and what it actually does.

The jury is still out on vertical integration (which is when companies own or manage their own supply chain). Some business gurus think it makes sense as it keeps profits in-house, while others warn against it as they believe companies run the risk of mis-managing a supply chain that is not their core business. Either scenario is true.
However, vertical integration becomes a real problem when large companies use their size or influence to build monopolies within their supply chain to shut out their competition. This is what the Competition Commission is investigating in their market enquiry, and what we, as ChickenFacts, are watching keenly. It is a phenomenon that we, in our research, have encountered often. For this reason we are compiling a directory of our 'Alternative Value Chain' which is a mapping project of all the poultry stakeholders in the country, large and small.
