Letter from the Editor

The saying 'The only constant is change' has been working overtime lately. Our own seismic elections have come and gone and our new government is currently taking shape, while rogue weather has been battering the country.
Globally, political shifts and climate change are also creating record-breaking uncertainty. And one of the outcomes of uncertainty is ..... rising prices.
People need to eat, it's as simple as that. As food prices rise, people simply eat less, or choose lower-quality food. The result is hunger and malnutrition.
According to the World Bank Food Security Index, low- and middle-income countries experience higher food inflation than high-income countries. The Economist Global Food Security Index states that food security has deteriorated steadily for five years.
Our own agricultural output for the last year has decreased, especially of basic food crops like maize - the result of drought.
The affordability of chicken is therefore a major concern. In the coming months we will focus on our crucial agricultural and import sector, with special attention on small and emerging poultry farmers and small and emerging stakeholders in the poultry value chain.
We will not only look at how to create more capacity locally but also how to balance the scales between import and export to ensure Food Security and good quality, affordable chicken to consumers.
Our webinar was the first step towards creating our network, but it won't be the last. By creating an alternative value chain, we aim to bring the producer closer to the customer, build a healthy network of supply and demand, and ultimately steady prices or even bring them down.
