Letter from the Editor

The reaction to our podcasts with Carla Kote and Kobedi Pilane was so strong that we are keeping them on the agenda.

There is a groundswell of transformation going on that is not waiting for the current incumbents to make space for emerging farmers, but are creating their own value chain. The publicity around this transformation is also enticing other small and emerging players out of the background and we are featuring them in future profiles.

The most exciting area of expansion is the potential for export. The local formal industry has long resisted expanding for export in the belief that domestic demand is enough. Expanding exports was in fact one of the pillars of the Poultry Master Plan that was never realised: it was sacrificed in favour of limiting imports. This perception is now being challenged.

The other issue of the day is the Competition Commission's market enquiry into the poultry value chain. It is a slow process and we will be unpacking the issues and the implications in later bulletins. Simply put, the Competition Commission wants to find out if large producers enjoy preferential access to all the aspects of production such as feed and stock, thereby marginalizing smaller players.

To assist you in understanding the process, we have compiled a Fact Sheet that unpacks the poultry industry value chain. Additionally, we feature our regular Poultry Analysis, an updated Food Basket Barometer, our Closer Look, and our podcast with Carla Kote.
