Letter from the Editor

From the feedback we are receiving, there is a discernable momentum towards meaningful transformation of the South African poultry industry, led by small and emerging farmers and stakeholders themselves. It is exciting and encouraging, because the message that is coming through is: there is huge potential out there and it is coming to us - we need to get ready to receive it.

Our conversation with trade consultant Carla Kote was revelatory. She made the point that the outside world is beating a path to our door but we need to be ready to let them in.

The other issue of the day is the Competition Commission's investigation into the poultry value chain. Whatever the outcome of the investigation, it signals a willingness by government to challenge the status quo. Simply put, they want to find out if large producers enjoy preferential access to all the aspects of production such as feed and stock, thereby marginalizing smaller players.

To assist you to understand the process, we have compiled a Fact Sheet that unpacks the poultry industry value chain. Additionally, we feature our regular Poultry Analysis, an updated Food Basket Barometer, our Closer Look, and our podcast with Carla Kote.
