Letter from the Editor

ChickenFacts is about to get a whole new look, with increased functionality and easier access to our very valuable information.

In fact, our update is reflecting the winds of change that are blowing through the entire industry, both for good and for bad. South Africa's poultry value chain is under scrutiny, a number of disruptors have entered the industry, and problems such as climate change, infrastructure challenges, input costs and Avian Flu have become permanent features.

What is becoming glaringly obvious, is that the industry requires a major shake-up and that the current convulsions are long overdue. Glen McMaster, in his Insider column, asks why there are no new poultry products on supermarket shelves. JL Mahlangu of NAFU (National African Farmers' Union) says that emerging farmers don't stand a chance unless they get government support. Our 'disruptors', like Flo Masoane, Carla Kote and Kobedi Pilane, are working on creating an 'alternative value chain'. The AMIE Academy will turn out their first cohort of new importers/exporters in November. (And we will be interviewing them in our podcast next week).

With global food security and the international poultry sector facing a number of threats, it is worthwhile to look abroad to see how other countries are facing headwinds.

If one looks at the Brazilian model, which has created the world's largest poultry exporter, it emerges that - for Brazil - the poultry industry was not its first priority. They first worked on getting the conditions right - investing in feed crops, forming co-operative farms for scale, creating and maintaining the crucial support infrastructure. There are lessons to be learned here - listen to the podcast in which we interview representatives from ABPA.

So over the next few weeks we will be approaching a number of stakeholders with the question: "What do you think should be in the Poultry Master Plan?" We are hoping that the answers will surprise and enlighten.
