The four-year Poultry Master Plan was launched in 2019 amid much fanfare with a set of laudable goals. Now the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (DTIC) is doing an analysis of what was achieved, and has asked stakeholders for input.
At the same time, the Competition Commission has launched a Market Inquiry into the poultry value chain, with a number of stated intentions. And ITAC has announced rebates on imported poultry as a temporary interim measure to pre-empt shortages and price increases. We are also seeing a number of large poultry producing companies unbundling or restructuring their operations.
It might be disingenuous to think that all these moves are coincidental. The South African poultry industry is under the most intense scrutiny of its existence. Not surprising, seeing that the industry is the most important segment of our agricultural sector and bound up closely with national food security and our economy.
A shake-up in the South African poultry industry is long overdue and the next few months, if not years, are likely to be .... interesting.
For this reason we are about to start featuring discussions with stakeholders who are calling for a new improved Poultry Master Plan, one that will include all roleplayers and will give equal weight to all voices. Over the next few months we will be doing interviews with analysts, economists, producers both large and small, farmers, suppliers and support industries.
This fits in with our 2024 theme of focussing on transformation of the industry.
To start the discussion with a bang, we present a salty but flavoursome opinion piece by our regular Insider Glen McMaster, this is a must-read!
Our usual weekly features include our latest Poultry Analysis, the updated Import Fact Sheet that sets the record straight on whether imports are increasing or not, and our very popular set of podcasts with our three industry disruptors, starting with Flo Mosoane, the founder of EasyChicken, an agri-tech start-up that intends to change the way small and emerging farmers operate.
This fits in with the general trend of bottom-up change that is affecting the entire poultry value chain. Flo's interview should be listened to in conjunction with the interviews with Carla Kote and Kobedi Pilane..... all three leaders of 'agri-innovation'.
