Letter from the Editor

For our last newsletter of the year, we reveal an exciting project that will reverberate for months. In conjunction with the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity group (PMBEJD), we have compiled a Food Basket Barometer, a set of Fact Sheets that will track the supermarket prices of a basket of essential foodstuffs.

Why is this important?

Food security is, quite literally, crucial to the health of a nation. Rising food costs that make essential foods unaffordable to a large segment of the population undermine the very foundation of a state. Getting insights into the costs of basic foods and the dynamics that influence these costs can assist all roleplayers in the food supply chain to make informed decisions.

Our first Fact Sheet looks at the Basic Food Basket, a collection of foods necessary for life. In future Fact Sheets, we will be featuring individual foodstuffs, along with analyses of their price dynamics. Poultry, of course, will feature significantly as chicken is still our most affordable protein and poultry products play a very large role in our basic food security.

Along with this, we have recorded an interview with Mervyn Abrahams of the PMBEJD in which he explains in fascinating detail how important this information is.
