It is a question we ask every December: can we afford Christmas this year? And every year the question becomes more relevant.
As we wind down 2023, our cost of living has soared. It's a global problem, but in South Africa it has become acute. Statistics do not give the full picture of the lived experience of the millions of people who live on or below the breadline.
We made contact with the work done by the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group (PMBEJD), an NGO that tracks the prices that lower-income consumers pay at the tills for their basic food basket. With their permission, we are in the process of publishing graphic representations of the Basic Food Basket Affordability Index, which we will be rolling out next week. An interview with Abrahams has delivered sobering insights.
This week we begin to launch our new project, the Food Basket Barometer, which will be based on figures provided by the PMBEJD, along with commentary provided by economics and agriculturalists. It promises to become a vital link in the consumer-awareness chain with implications for the poultry industry as it is now becoming clear that chicken is no longer the most affordable protein source for lower-income consumers.
